Setup a network connection in the office here a couple months ago (through a D-Link router) ... all worked well. Two weeks ago one computer refused to make any kind of connection to the other computer nor will it connect to the internet. Going into properties, have tried to 'repair' the problem numerous times only to have it sit there and grind away for some time and then give a msg saying it cannot repair the problem. Other steps taken have been

1. Have removed the network card and replaced with another one in that computer
2. Removed the network card and then have gone into the windows registry and eliminated all references to that card ... and IP numbers
3. IP number showing on that computer is no where near what the number was and should be. Have gone into windows registry and eliminated all references to IP numbers only to have the same incorrect number pop back up when checking it
4. Have reinstalled windows xp pro
5. Have checked all other pertinant info and sections in win xp pro for connections
6. Have removed all network connections
7. Have connected that computer directly into the cable modem, bypassing the router in all steps above at different times ... still no connection can be made and incorrect IP numbers show

Myself and 2 friends have all looked and worked with this problem over the past week and it completely baffles us. Am looking at this board to see if anyone else has any ideas as to what the problem(s) might be before I reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of win xp pro again. Thanks!

Hi,

Does this machine obtain its I.P address via DHCP ?
Have you tried giving it a static I.P address.

If a machine fails to get a DHCP address then it normally
defaults to a safe I.P address (forget exact numbering
convention). This is detailed in the advanced I.P
properties of network card.

This PC should be able to connect to internet unless your
ISP uses MAC address filtering, in which case you need to
tell your ISP the MAC address of your network card.
Type 'ipconfig /all' in a DOS box to see list of all
network cards and their details (including MAC address).

Does the Windows eventlog have any nasty errors ?
Does Device Manager show any errors ?

Can you ping other machines on your network ?

Regards,

Tim

All I can say is that I'm having excatly the same problem with networking a
PC and a laptop, both running XP Pro. I've preaty much taken the same steps
you have and still have the same problem....
