I have a Windows XP Pro desktop. My NIC card is in an "aquiring network
address" state. I cannot get this to change. I have tried to remove the NIC
and reinstall. Each time it reinstalls it comes back in the same state.

My ISP is verizon. I have a netgear wireless g 4 port router. I do have
internet access from my second computer.

I believe some portion of windows networking is messed up but do not know
how to fix (short of reinstalling OS).

Please help? Thanks

Do all troubleshooting methodically, making one change at a time,
keeping notes if necessary, and testing after each change.

1. Make sure the ethernet cable is snugly connected on both ends. Reseat
it.

2. Swap out the ethernet cable for a known-working one.

3. Put the ethernet cable into a different port on the router.

4. Uninstall the NIC and swap it out for a known working one.

I tried all your suggestions except the NIC card. This is an onboard NIC and
I do not have a NIC card to try. But I think it is software related because I
can use the NIC to get online if I connect directly to the modem.

Thanks
