connecting two remote computers

Myself and another person want to connect our computers
so we can see each others shared folders. We both have xp
pro and are both connected to to isp's through broadband/
cable. we have each set up the other as a user on our
respective computers and have had some fragile sucess
using a VPN. However, this often just will not work, we
have had a string of error messages eg. 733 (tcp/ip
protocol problems) 800 (computers don't even see each
other!). If anyone could guide us through a simple
solution to this problem it would be fantastic. We have
literally wasted weeks messing around with these dam
machines!
 
Did you ever get a response to your question? I am trying
to connect home and work with XP Pro remote and it is not
working!
