Yeah,
I am trying to share files between my laptop & my
desktop, I have purchased a crossover cable and both have
ethernet cards already installed. I have run the network
setup from the XP disc on both now and still I get
nowhere! If anyone could be as kind to give me step by
step help I would greatly appreciate the chance to get
these two computers communicating so I can move on w\ my
project and no longer have to stress out trying to figure
a clearly understandable set of directions explaining how
to achieve a simple file sharing connection!

First, make sure that the Netbeui protocol is an active
protocol on both computers. Finding out this bit of info
drove me crazy.

Go to:

Start > Control Panel > Network connections > Select
local area network > select change settings If Netbeui
is not listed, click "Install" and follow the screen
prompts. If is is listed and not checked, check the box.

Next, go to network connections as above and click
on "Set up a home or small office network" and follow the
instructions to make a network disc. After the computer
has made the disk, put the disc in your other computer,
load Windows Explorer, and and double click on the setup
file.

You may have to turn off both computers and boot
simultaneously after the setup procedure is completed.
This procedure worked for me, but now any file transfer
over 4 GB times out and tries to start all over again.

It's OK to use the NetBEUI protocol, but it's never necessary. All
Windows networking functions can use TCP/IP as the only protocol.

NetBEUI is an un-supported protocol in Windows XP. That means that
Microsoft recommends not using it, hasn't fully tested it, and won't
answer questions or give technical support on it. To install NetBEUI
on Windows XP, follow the steps in this Microsoft Knowledge Base
article:

HOW TO: Install NetBEUI on Windows XP

The network setup disk enables TCP/IP on other computers. It doesn't
do anything with NetBEUI.
