can I connect two pc over a direct usb cabel and how

It isn't possible to connect two computers using a standard USB cable.

Here are two ways to do what you want:

1. Get a pair of USB Ethernet adapters and connect them just like
Ethernet adapters that mount inside a computer. Connecting two
computers directly, without a hub, switch, or router, requires a
specially wired crossover cable.

2. Get a USB-to-USB cable, with added circuitry, that can connect two
computers directly. Here are some sites for more information:

I have a USB cable bought from Comp USA that says it can be used to transfer files from one computer to another. It has no instructions on how to do this. i have plugeed them into two computers (USB on both), one W98 SE, one Windows XP home, and get nothing other than a hardware device not found warning from the xp computer. (the other doesn't even recogniz a USB, even though it has a port)...is there software I need, setting on the W98 computer or the XP to make this work?

You need to configure both machines. In XP, read the articles in Help
about "networking".

This thing *should* come with instructions and drivers. Please check if you misplaced them,
or contact CompUSA support. Several types of these cables exist so they will ask for
exact name or model of the cable.
