Connecting two computers together

Hi,

I want to connect my laptop to my friends laptop to share
files. We are both in the same room and are using a
network ethernet cable to link the laptop's together. I
tryed to set up a new connection with the
wizard. I go to Control Panel>Network
Connections>Create a new connection. Then with the
wizard Set up an advanced connection. I want to click on
the Connect directly to another computer, but this
is 'greyed' out and I can not click on it. My friends
computer does have this option available. What is wrong
with my computer and how can I fix it! Is this something
to do with a network card? If it is then how do I know
if I have one?

You need a crossover cable, as Haus said.

You're creating a LAN (local area network) connection with the other
computer. You don't need to use "Create a new connection", which only
applies to other types of connections, such as dial-up and parallel
cable.
