I installed an ethernet card in my nieces system running XP, but i cant
access the internet. i have it hooked into my linksys router and thought that
the connection would be automatic. what other steps do i need to take to get
it online?

Please provide a little more info. What Internet Service Provider do you
have? Cable or DSL or Dial-up? Not saying that I can answer your question,
but each ISP requires different set ups for accessing the internet.

My ISP is cable. i have a linksys wireless router that i use for my daughters
system, but im just working on my nieces system and want to check some things
out on the web with it. updates, anti-virus, etc etc. i installed a belkin
desktop network pci card into her system because its what she'll be using at
home.

:

Control Panel > Network Connections. Does your Belkin card show up? If
not you may need to install some Belkin drivers. If yes, is the
connection enabled? If not, you know what to do next.

Good luck, jimbo

It doesnt show Belkin, it shows realtek, but the card is enabled. i pinged it
and no packets were lost. what am i missing here?

John,

Provide some diagnostic data from your computer (or any working one on the LAN),
and from the nieces computer, and we can diagnose the problem.

The Realtek is probably the built-in NIC that came with your computer.
You could try to disable that NIC, reboot and see if the Belkin shows
up. If not, you most likely need Belkin drivers.

Good luck, jimbo
