1.Im running a laptop from home which is xp pro.connected to the internet via
cable modem, i have a local workgroup on it and have added my works domain to
it, when im at home and log into my works domain i want to be able to log
into my works email ( via outlook), i configured outlook correctly but it
says it does not recognize m/soft exchange servers name, which i know is
correct. Any ideas as to how i coonect to my works mail server to retrieve my
mail?

2.I can connect at home to the internet on my laptop without any problem,
but if i try and ping any address it comes back unrecognizeable, even though i
know the website is running, obviously this is a dns conflict, but any ideas
how i resolve?

Many thanks for any help.

I'm not sure what you mean by adding a domain to a local workgroup but this
is not possible so I must be misunderstanding you. A PC can't be a member of
a domain & a workgroup at the same time. If you set up outlook the same way
you do at work it probably shouldn't work because your "work" is not going to
allow the type of traffic that outlook uses to go across the internet. If
you have a VPN connection to the network at work then you could set it up to
work the same way because then it would be as if you were on the same
network. You can set itup to give you roaming profiles so that it stores
your messages locally and then you read & write messages when you are at home
they just won't be sent until you are back at work.

about your second problem: First how are you connecting to your cable modem
(USB or ethernet)? If its ethernet then try checking to see if you have a
static IP address & static DNS server. If you do then you really aren't
connecting to the cable modem at all. From there it really depends on how
"work" has the laptop set up.
