Connecting in XP to digital camera

We have lost the proprietary software for viewing pictures
on a FujiFilm FinePix 6900 digital camera and cannot get
XP (brand new to us) to recognize the camera. We've
downloaded "irfanview" in an attempt to transfer the
pictures to our computer but so far no progress. I
thought XP would automatically detect the camera? Do I
need to download a driver, and if so, where do I put it in
XP? Thank you for any assistance you can provide. This
is frustrating.

I would go to the Fuji site and download the appropriate software for your
camera to work on XP.
You simply make a new folder on your computer, call it Fuji driver or
anything you want. Download the driver file into your new folder. Open the
new folder and double click on the driver file to install it.
