I want to connect two laptops running Windows XP so as to share a broadband
Internet connection.

I am using a cross over cable. Can anyone help? Thank you

Lots more details needed. What kind of Internet connection/device do you
have? What have you tried, what has or has not worked? What error messages
have you seen?

Anyway, I'd recommend you quit while the quitting is good, get a cheap
router, and hook everything up to that instead.

Hi
The content of the following links will provide you with a basic tutorial about Sharing
Internet; it is short and to the point. The pages were written by me ages ago. You
might ignore the prices, and the specific choice of hardware, stick with the principles
they are still the same.
Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing -

Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...? -

Jack (MVP-Networking).

I am connecting to the Internet on a Broadband connection using a separate
router. I have managed to physically connect the two laptops which shows a
connection in Network Places. I have not been able to access the Internet
from the second laptop. I have been through the newtork wizard several times
and have not received any error messages.

I don't think getting a cheap router would ease my problems, I think it
would just make it worse! Surely it should be easy to connect two machines
using a cross over cable?

Connecting them via a crossover cable is easy - it's the rest that's
somewhere between difficult and impossible. :-)

But seriously, with a router in the equation, you put the router into the
network as the first device after your cable/DSL/whatever modem. (I doubt
the device you already have is actually a router, if it were you could hook
both PCs up to it and your problems would be over.) Then each PC hooks up
to the router. At that point the router handles network access between the
two computers, and between each computer and the Internet. The computers
will be given appropriate IP addresses by the router, about all you should
have to do at that point is check File and Printer Sharing settings or run
the Network Setup Wizard on both computers.
