We are running Windows2000 server . What is the best software or means to
log on to the server approximately half a mile away and access the
accounting package on the server . We have a 128 shared internet connection.
First, the only secure means is to VPN into the remote office. You can
setup the server to allow VPN inbound, but you would be more secure if
your firewall at the remote end was doing the VPN Authentication instead
of the 2000 Server.
The VPN gets you a connection to the office and is needed as the first
step. If you don't use a VPN, and you have business data, you're asking
for trouble and possible loss of your data to thieves.
Second, if you have a computer at the remote location running XP or
2000, enable Remote Desktop on that computer and then you can connect to
it using Remote Desktop.
If you don't have RD on the computer at the office, you could install
VNC on it and then change the default VNC port to some off-the-wall
number, like 28591 (I just made that up) and then use it from your home
over the VPN.
RD uses about 30kbps, so your 128k would be enough. Same with VNC over
the VPN.
