fwiw = for what its worth
outlook 2003 is the first version to support connecting to a microsoft
exchange server over https. there are pretty specific requirements to get
this working. for outlook 2002 and earlier, your only option is to go
pop/imap/smtp or vpn in to the corporate backbone if you want full mapi
access.
so in your case for remote connectivity, you can use the web browser to
connect to owa or if the ports are open on the corporate firewall, connect
to said server via POP or IMAP. (IMAP being preferred so your mail stays on
the server.)

thanks Neo,
Please pardon my lack of knowledge here, just 2 more questions: what does
fwiw mean? and are you saying that it is not possible with Outlook 2000 and
Exchange 5.5, but it is possible if you are using Outlook 2000 with Exchange
server is running Exchange 2003?
If the latter is true, and if the exchange server is running 2003, would I
then specify the server's address on the "Servers" tab, and then switch on
the "Incoming Mail (POP3)" setting to "This server requires a secure
connection (SSL)" setting?

Can you do this, or is it only possible using a web browser? We are using
Outlook 2000 and Exchange Server 5.5.
If it is possible, how do I do this? I've tried entering the ip address
of
the server into the server properties, but I've had no luck with getting
connected. There is no problem doing this through my web browser.
HELP!!!
