Confuzzled on Backing up the registry

When I go to File... Export and then save the entire (not just the "tree
branch") registry is this backing it up? I know this sounds stupid, but I
have little experience with this very VITAL lifeline of my computer and I
want to back it up the right way.

I would use the more comfortable EruNT
