Confusion over repair options

Was doing SP1 via Windows update when computer froze halfway through
install.
Now it won't start properly. Just keeps rebooting on startup.
Tried 'safe mode' and 'last known good configuration' but still does the
same.

Was advised to do a 'repair' but we do not have a retail CD - only a
'factory reset' CD.

Is there anything I can do apart from 'borrowing' someone else's retail CD?
And assuming I do that (or even buy one), will a repair be possible or will
it ask for serial numbers or something?

And will 'repair' save programs and their settings?

I've trawled through the newsgroups and can't get any clear direction.
Surely we DO have a licence so why hasn't the manufacturer given us a proper
CD?

If we send it back to the manufacturers, will they be able to do any more
than we could if only we had a retail CD?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

A retail CD will not work with your Product Key so that is not an
option.

Sending the computer to service would not benefit anything.
You would likely get the computer back as if it was new...all your
data gone.

The manufacturer determines what their buyers need and people buy
accordingly.
If you do not like it this way, communicate to them through regular
mail, Email or both.
As long as they hear nothing on the subject, the manufacturer will
likely continue along this path.
This feature may be something to keep in mind next time you are ready
for a new computer.

Check your manual and/or contact the computer manufacturer for repair
options you have.
The manufacturer has given you a proper CD.
Often there are none other than starting over.

did you try using system restore in safe mode. Unless you turned it off a
restore point should have been set when you started installing sp1.

Thanks for reply but the article you refer to assumes that one has a usable
computer which of course I do not have. When it boots it gets so far then
the screen flickers and it starts again; same in any of the safe modes.

I think the original freeze was during the installation of SP1.

Other posts seem to suggest that despite the fact that all that I did was
reply 'OK' about three times doing something as innocuous as Windows Update,
I now have a trashed computer for which the only option is a complete format
/ reinstall. If that's the case, I find it shocking. Maybe manufacturers
should be forced to put a warning on computers sold in this way.

Luckily, most of the data has been backed up but even so, programs, drivers
and settings will still take an age to re-install.

If anyone's got any other comments and or suggestions, I'd be glad to hear.

Thanks.

What did you do when the computer stopped responding during the
installation of sp1? Did you shutdown? Restart? Control-alt-delete? As a
matter of fact, did it stall during the download phase, or the installation
phase?
