I know I haven't downloaded SP2 and am still running SP1, but...why does
my XP version ID include "xpsp2" in its build, as in:

"Windows XP (R) Build 2600 xpsp2_gdr.040517-1325: Service Pack 1"

Does the "xpsp2" have anything to do with SP2?

Some of the updates on your system are part of SP2 that was released in
individual patches prior to the full release of SP2.. your system is still
XP SP1..

Go to this website for info on how to install SP2

SP2 installation.. http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

SPYBOT 1.3 download.. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

AdawareSE.. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Ordering SP2 cd free from Microsoft..
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
or

... get it free from major computer stores and computer mag cds

Good luck

Uhmmm....well, I hate to contradict the PA Bear, but actually Yes it does
have something to do with SP2. ;)

After XP SP1 was released to the world, any update that MS released for
Windows XP after that may have an earmark similar to the "xpsp2" one you
mention that meant it was scheduled to be included in the next available XP
Service Pack (which at that time was SP2).

So all those MS Updates you see on an RTM or SP1/1a system that show
something about "SP2" in the naming means those files/updates should have
been included in SP2 RTM. And when you install XP SP2 then all those
updates should be removed from your Add&Remove Programs listing and in
several other places on your system.

BTW, you can probably see those older (pre-SP2) items listed in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811113 So, yeah, as you can see the
reference to SP2 you may see on an older version of XP does actually have
something to do with SP2.

<swat> What's a "newuser" to make of that? Now Our Poor PRNole is even
*more* cornfused.

PRNole, Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

If you have SP2 installed, the you will see only...

;SP2;

....displayed.
