After many years with the same ISP, I have changed to NetZero and need to
set up OE as my default mail program (because NZ will not open its mail if I
click a link to an email address.)

For the life of me, I have set every setting I can find, but Windows is so
Byzantine I cannot find the setting that will make Windows perform this
operation. As a result, I get the message "Could not perform this operation
because the default mail client is not properly installed."

I have never before had to use OE for mail, and cannot figure out if I need
an OE setting or an IE setting to make OE open when I click an email link.
Most email links have the email address, and can be cut-and-pasted, but not
all. Herein lies my problem. I need to send an email.

Please help me. Thanks.

Your ISP should be able to step you through the correct settings. If they
can't, or won't, change your ISP. Some of the specific settings only your
ISP knows.

In MSIE, Tools:: Internet Options:: Programs.

Alternate route: Control Panel:: Internet Options:: Programs.

But, as others have observed, if you can't get help from your ISP
about this then you have the wrong ISP. There's really no excuse for
an ISP not to work with any standard mailer.

Which mail program are you using now?
