Hey when I try to boot my system I get a "missing or corrupt config.sys files" errors. I can't even boot up from safe mode or using my startup CD. How can I get my system up and running without having to replace the hard drive

Hi,

Please make sure that the CD-ROM drive is first in the
BOOT Device Priority in BIOS and boot the computer with
Windows XP CD and repair the OS.

Hope this help!

Hi

XP does use config.sys. Are you sure that you have the correct error message?

A typo, I'm sure. You meant "XP does *not* use config.sys."

Are you sure that you have the correct error
message?

Ot perhaps Tony isn't using WIndows XP, and posted to wrong
newsgroup.

Hi

Installed a separate dvd and a separate cdr from my dad's pc ( an 97/98 dell dimension 333mhz running 98se), a few probs with the setup not recognising each drive but nailed it in the end, installed the software but it came up with

'this cd burning software could make your operating system become unstable'

and then after installing dvd drivers:-

''this dvd software could make your operating system become unstable'

I figured ok, just don't use them then as they are probably too old and not compatible with XP...

So turned it off, put the panels back on and turned it back on.....window comes up

'your cd and dvd drivers will cause instability and create operating and start up/ shut down problems so windows has not opened the drivers'

So I uninstalled the software packages, took out the cdr and dvd drives and resigned myself to splashing out on a new XP badged cdr burner/dvd player.

Round two:--

installed brand new XP compliant multi drive, no problem, installed software, no problem, played a dvd, burned a couple of cd-r's, excellent , cooking on gas....

Put the panels back on, turned it off had me tea......

Turned it back on after me tea.....

After the Dell logo comes up and the bios bar runs across the screen, it stops.

Then comes up with a black screen and

'Windows could not start because the following file is corrupt or missing:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

I haven't got any set up discs or installation discs because the pc is second hand and came with XP........

Am I screwed?
What do I need to do to fix it?.........
Is set up disc different to installation disc?
Do I need to buy XP and start all over again?...
How can I load any discs if Windows wont even start?...
Help?

The original problem with with the software and not the drives. Had you
just gotten XP compatible software for the cd burner amd dvd drives, you
would have been "cooking".

Now, you may need do a repair install of XP. You will need the original XP
install CD (not a recovery CD) and set the BIOS to "boot from CD".

A lot of the old burning software is *not* compatible, and removing it
leaves orphaned entries in registry that result in these messages, and
often the drives not getting started at all. To tidy up, get a registry
patch file, cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract
it, r-click on it and merge it into the registry and reboot

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you *do* use.

Thanks Yves

You're right, A few people have said the same thing, it looks like I will have to go out and buy XP and reload again from scratch as the pc is second hand and came with XP already loaded, no discs at all.

Not good news.

I was advised to install Nero and Power DVD and these would have run the drives with no problems and also not upset XP either........ah the benefit of hindsight eh?

Oh well, better start saving then..

Oh..by the way, dont know what you mean by 'set the bios'...what do I do to do that, especially if the computer just sits there with that config\system message and wont let me do anything else....

Should have stuck to fixing phone lines in Moorcroft...

Thanks

Yves

Thanks, the pc is second hand and was preloaded with XP-pro, I didn't get dics with it, so I'm screwed......$290 for XP home......just great......

Teach me to fool around with it, someone told me to load Nero / Powerdvd software and I wouldn't have been in this mess......now they tell me!!

Thanks for the advice....

Thanks Alex

I tried loading the MS XP set up diskettes last night but halfway thru diskette three it stopped and came up with:

SETUPREG.HIV could not load erro code 1039
set up cant continue

I tried it again but it then said the same but with error 4108

Im totally lost by it all now...I did get the patch you mentioned just now, but wouldn't know where to begin to 'merge it to the registry. the damn thing wont even get past the setup stage....I think it's dead......but thanks for the input.

I need to down load the www.XP.com/sledgehammerofdoom/5lb/teminalvelocity patch

You should not be needing to boot from those diskettes - only if the
machine is not capable of booting a CD. All work with XP boots the XP
CD direct. And you should not need to do that for this matter.

You right click on the cdgone.reg file, extracted from the downloaded
zip, and take Install from the popup. Only takes a moment.

And BTW you should not be trying to install drivers that may have come
with CD or DVD drives; in any normal machine XP will use its own. A CD
burning package will install any drivers it needs for burning as part of
installing the package
