conecting two computers

i got two laptops side by side connected with a network cable. how do i get
them to see one another.

one is xp pro the other xp home. the xp home one has a reinstall of windows
and im trying to connect with xp pro to take ownership of access denied
document folder.
 
Make sure that they are connected with a crossover cable. An ordinary
ethernet cable won't work.
