Conditional printing in mail merge

I there a way of entering alternative paragraphs or other items within mail
merge?

What I used to know as conditional printing.

My addresses database (in Access) includes 'county' as a field for sorting
purposes, but some addresses do not require the county as part of the
address.

How can I omit that field in the printed address when it's not required?

For example Southampton is in Hampshire, but 'Southampton', followed by the
Post Code, is sufficient and 'Hampshire' is superfluous.

Thanks for any assistance!

Don't include the county field in your merge fields in your main document?

What criteria determines whether the county field prints or not?
You could include another field in the data - PrintCounty to contain Y or N
then use a conditional field to place the country and its associated line
feed when required eg
..
{Mergefield City}{IF {Mergefield PrintCounty} = "Y" "
{Mergefield County}"
{Mergefield PostCode}

To reply to Charles, I want to be able to sort my correspodents' addresses
by, among other things, 'County'.

At the same time, I want to address my correspondence correctly, and not all
addresses require the county as part of their postal address.

My question was intended to find a way to resolve this dilemma.

NB I am using 'want' realising that it's not the same as 'need'!

Graham's response looks likely, although, on the face of it, it looks beyond
my ability at the moment!

Nevertheless, I will try to work it out.

Thanks, folks!

I do not believe you have to print a mergefield to use it for sorting. I
don't run these kinds of sorts.
