Conditional Formatting

I have a spreadsheet that I have rows of data that I want
to color code. For example, if certain information in
some of the cells in a row meet a certain criteria I want
the rows to be blue, other rows I want to be yellow. My
question is, if I want to get a total count of the rows
that are blue and as I add blue rows continue to give me
a running total what formula would I have to enter. Would
I use a COUNT function and if so how would I specify that
I want a count of only the blue rows.

I am using excel 2000.

Chip Pearson has some code for working with colours:

Or, you could use the SUMPRODUCT function to count the rows that match
your criteria. For example:

=SUMPRODUCT(($D$2:$D$38="Pencils")*($G$2:$G$38>50))
