Computers drop off the network

Sometimes I am unable to browse computers over the network share but when I
ping the IP address of a computer it's ok, then awhile later or after a
restart they work ok.
 
Forgot to mention that the computers are logged into a domain.

How many computers? Are all computers on the same subnet?

How many computers do you have this problem browsing FROM (ie when you're at the
desktop, you can't see other computers)? When you have this problem, can you
see no other computers?

How many computers do you have this problem browsing TO? When you have this
problem, can no computer see the problem computer(s)? When you have this
problem, can no computer see any other computers?

How often is sometimes? Is there a pattern?

Start with an idea of the scope of the problem, and we'll see where to go from
there.
