During a normal Windows XP setup, it presents me a generated Computername. I
can change this to (almost) whatever i want or accept this generated one.

What i would like to know is how and based on what this Computername is
generated, mostly based on what. And how does it make sure this name is
unique?

Grx,
Joris

The computer name only has to be unique to your network of computers. If you
have a network of say 100 computers, you can have only one computer named
Jane. Hence the generated name. If you have two, or more, named the same,
the 2nd and 3rd will not be able to join the network when they try to login.
They will get a violation notice that this name is already used on the
network.

If you have a stand alone (not networked) computer, Name it anything you
like.

... unless of course it's a Novell client, which doesn't use the Netbios name.

(Just being academic!)
