A friend's computer had water spilt on it and was shut down
immediatly, unplugged and dried out. When he tried to boot up it
begins to boot ok but then gives an error message <directory can't
enumerate>. He tried to access the C: drive form the command prompt
but can only get the C: displayed but can't do anything there.

Where should he look for the most likely problem caused by water being
spilt on the tower?

Thanks
Mike

Anywhere where it landed. Even when you've dried it out, water can
remain trapped under components. Add to that the fact that the powdery
residue sometimes left is actually conductive and can short components
out and you can pretty much work it out for yourself.

Had the same on a Chaintech mobo. After a couple of hours drying,
everything worked but Windows wouldn't install. Linux would but would
hang on setting the clock. Turns out the Realtime Clock, the only thing
still powered even when you've unplugged everything, died.

power supply, memory slots, PCI slots, if the water gets anywhere near the
'zif' (CPU) and it was running,or even plugged in during the spill, you can
kiss the CPU goodbye.

If it doesn't boot up, how did he get to the command promt? If he does
get a command prompt, then, it seems, the mobo booted, an operating
system loaded, but the progtram running the command prompt seems
corrupted. The hard drive?
