My XP computer won't retain the workgroup name. We have an external modem
from our phone co for DSL, but this problem started before we got it.

Things will be working just fine, then the computer won't access the net
with the browser. It will receive and send mail, but not browse the net. If
we go in to look at the settings, we find that it's gone back to the default
'MSHOME' workgroup instead of what we renamed it to.

Does anyone know why this is happening --- or what we can do to fix it so
that it stops happening?

Thank you

Isn't anyone going to answer my question? Surely it's not that difficult to
answer.

Another note. That is an old article but might apply. To remove network
card you have to go to device manager and uninstall it. When you reboot it
will install again.

If that does not solve it post back.

Nancy,

Does your computer connect to the Internet thru dialup? Is it the only computer
in your home, or are there others?

Maybe some detail about your network, and about the problem itself, would be a
good thing.

Now, by "browse the net", do you mean surf the new thru the browser? That
doesn't have anything to do with the workgroup name. Maybe the workgroup name
changing is one symptom of the problem, but I don't think it's causing the
problem by itself.
