Hi -

I have been having problems with my computer for the last
several days.

When I turn the computer on it tells me that the computer
has been shut down improperly and gives me the option to
start in safe mode, last know good configuration or to
start normally. I have tried starting using any of the
options available to no avail.

Each time I select one it goes to the Windows XP start
screen, flash a blue error screen (which I cannot read
since it flashes so quickly and nothing I have tried will
freeze it) and then restarts. COnstant cycle without any
hope of actually running.

I inserted the CD to try to run a repair on it. I
selected the "1" and then it asks me for a password. I
didn't have one set up and hit enter. Will not accept it
and after 3 attempts tells me to hit any key to reboot. I
have gone into the SETUP and set a password and it will
not accept this one either. SO, I have no idea what
password it is looking for.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Casie

P.S. I am typing this at work and do not internet access
any but work right now until I can get this computer at
home fixed.

You don't have many options left. All I can suggest is
hold and depress F8 let it beeb, maybe you can force a
real safe mode that way. If you get in. Run virus
software, spyware. Otherwise reload your installation
disks, unless you want to bring it to compusa or some
place like that to fix it.

.
I have the same problem. It occurred after xp service
pack 2 was installed. Good luck because i've had none so
far.

This was an absolute nightmare!

Win XP was *useless* after I downloaded and installed
SP2. The PC wouldn't function properly at all. And, I
ain't no novice either.

I contacted Gateway tech and it turns out that many
customers were living the same nightmare. Gateway told me
that SP2 is Beta. If that's the case, why weren't we --MS
customers-- told that before downloading and installing?

After all said and done (yah, tried chkdsk, etc.), I
FDISKd the thing and started from scratch. Sure, I don't
have SP2, but my PC is working and that's what matters.

I use ZoneAlarm firewall and have no complaints. Until MS
fixes SP2, I see no reason why anyone should risk
complete PC meltdown.

There's a new option in Advanced Options Menu <F8>
- Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure -
to avoid continuous reboot cycle

Then you can read the blue-screen & research STOP error

The 1st R (XP CD boot) is the Recovery Console (the password is the
Administrator
password created at install)
Then 2nd R is for Repair Installs - and likely the one you'll need
