Hello

Please help. I need to perform a clean install of Windows XP. I have the
original XP operating system disk. However, when I try and use it to
reinstall, I get a window popping up that tells me that I cannot continue
because my "existing XP is newer than the one I am trying to install". I
presume this is because since I first got XP in 2002, I have downloaded all
the Microsoft updates and SP2.

Does anyone know of a way around this. I really need to do a clean reinstall
but am just coming up against this brick wall.

Also, it seems I do not have a bootable CD drive as I do not get the option
to "Press any key to boot from CD" when I start up the computer - I have to
wait for the computer to start and then manually run the CD .

Thanks
Tom

ll genuine/original Windows XP CDs are bootable.
OEM recover CDs may not be - what do you really have?, or is your machine
actually configured and capable of booting from a CD - see you BIOS and
motherboard/PC manual for more information .

The only way to get around the problem you are having is to make a CD that
has SP2 slipstreamed into the original CD.
There are lots of sites on the internet that will show you how to do this -
just use your favourite search engine. http://search.msn.com/

Hi Tom2030,

You are correct, it views your install CD as an older version due to your
having installed the Service Pack. You could create a slipstreamed install
CD (XP with SP2) by following the instructions here:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm
or many people seem pleased with having used autostreamer:
http://www.autopatcher.com/autostreamer.html

As to not booting to the install CD, did you ensure that the boot device
order in your computer's BIOS is set to try booting from CD drive as first
boot device?

You're trying to reinstall WinXP from Within the OS. Don't.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
