computer very slow

i am having major access problems when trying to access
anything on my computer. this includes all drives and
programs. have defragmented all hard drives and problem
still persists, any ideas will be welcome
 
You can use Task Manager and or Performance Monitor to see what process is
consuming the cpu/mem
 
Please give details of your PCs spec and the type of progs
running and which if any at same time

i got a 1ghz PIII with 512mb ram running win 2000 pro, no
only progs i run at startup is msn messenger and internet
explorer.........i have tried defragmenting hard drives
any ideas???
 
Is your slowness consistent across different profiles? That is, if you log
on as a different user, does the problem persist?
Did this slowness come upon your computer gradually?
When was the computer first used, under this installation of the OS?
What service packs have you installed? Did the computer slow down/speed up
upon such installations of SPs?
