My computer a my fax machine share the same phone line.
When the line has an incoming call my computer will
automatically turn on. Why is it doing this? I don't
recall changing anything that could cause this problem.

In your BIOS (usually accessed by depressing DEL key during boot up or F12 -
specific to motherboard manufacturer) there is a setting for "wake on ... '
which includes various devices - looking there, the answer (setting) should
be obvious (ring/modem).

.
Are you putting it in standby?Try this---control panel
you use >>> properties >>> configure button >>> power
management tab >>>uncheck the box for allow this device
to bring computer out of standby >>> OK ....(You may
also want to get a adware remover)sometimes,if you
download spyware it changes your settings without your
knowlege. You may also want to watch your phone bill, these
spyware sometimes get your computer to dial 900 #. You
can get a free one called ad aware from this site
http://www.webattack.com/get/adaware.shtml
get it open it up,check for updates, then run it thru.

Try looking in the bios normally F2 or DEL when the system is on the
first boot screen (mother board splash or simillar). you will
probably find it in the advanced setting part and will be wake on
modem ring or if it is external modem then it could be on a com port
have a look im sure this will be where the problem lies.

It can be useful if you want to access your pc from another modem away
from home so you dont have to have the pc on all the time there is
also the same setting to wake on LAN (local area network) this will
wake the machine if anouther was to make a request to that mac.

Hope this helps
