after spending about 1 1/2 hours trying to get 2 computers talking I changed
something and started to get 'serious' system crashes and reboots about 10
minutes later I gave up for the night, but when I got up this morning I
realised that I had forgotten to use a crossover cable and was just using the
standard RJ45 cable from my wireless router.

does anybody know could this have cashed the strange 'serious' crashes and
if so is it possible to damage the network port by forgetting to use one?

Without a lot more detail (like what it was you changed, what the 'serious'
system crashes are, and so on) an intelligent answer is difficult to come up
with. I would doubt that the use of a normal cable versus a crossover cable
caused any damage to the network card.

sorry , i realise that there wasn't much info on there just as I have already
shifted the computer upstairs and the error isn't comming up now I was only
looking for a vague answer, also I had reboot on errors set and due to
getting so irritated with it didn't remember to disable it so haven't got
much more more info.

Thanks for the reply anyway
