I posted a message today explaining the problem I'm having with a friends computer. Basically it's constantly rebooting. I followed the directions given to me below

Boot to WinXP CD (change BIOS for boot order, if needed). Proceed to the Setup/Repair/Quit screen and choose 'r' for the Recovery Console
Choose 1 for the choice of location and ENTER
Password as needed. At the prompt type
chkdsk /r This will start a repair form of the checkdisk. If it gives report of unrecoverable errors---->hard drive is likely failing. Recovered or no errors are good. Type fixboot and ENTER.this will try to fix the boot sector. Type exit to leave the Recovery console. Reboot to normal desktop----> if not successful, boot back onto the WinXP CD and choose Setup(ENTER)
F8 at the EULA and then choose the 'r'---repair option there. This will re-write the WinXP files to the originals. All Windows Updates and restore points are gone; data and applications are considered safe.

I ran chkdsk /r and it gave me a message saying that it found several errors that couldn't be repaired. (That's not the exact message) I also tried to run setup and select repair, but that option wasn't available. Does anyone have any other suggestions? At this point I would be willing to reinstall XP, but I need to save the data on the hard drive. I can't even boot in safe mode. It reboots when I do that as well. If I install XP over the current installation will I lose all data? Please help

Thanks

your problem is maybe a worm virus. try doing this
1.start and then run..
2.type: shutdown -
3.if that doesn't work type: shutdown -a
