Computer shutting down automatically

I would like my computer to turn off automatically when I chose shutdown from the start menu. When I had windows ME it would atomatically turn off when I told it to shut down. When I upgraded to Windows XP professional, it will not shut off automatically. Is there a way to do this. I have to now shut it off by using the power button.
