I have a presario 2700t laptop running xp pro. Computer shuts down at or just after windows screen. Was able to get into safe mode, but lost that too. It come up with no taskbar or anything. I installed a repair install xp from boot cd. Still shutting down in the same area. My husband bought the 2004 Norton Internet Security last night for his computer and I ran the emergency scan from the boot cd section. It says no infection. I am now at an A:\> prompt, is there any way to get to a C: prompt from here and if there is, is there anything I can do?????? Any help would be appreciated, I'm at a loss and can't lose data on machine

Thanks
Sandr

Sandra,

By no "error or warning" do you mean no message displayed? Did you check Event
Viewer (Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer) for clues?

Make sure you don't have a cooling problem. Are all the cooling fans running,
with no airflow problem? Check fan filters too - make sure they're clean.

If not a cooling problem, I'd suspect spyware or virus infection. Norton is a
good product - but it's not perfect. And if you ran it from the install CD,
without updating signatures, definitely not perfect. You have to have
absolutely current virus signatures, or spyware signatures, for a reliable scan
- using any security product.

Be sure to start in Safe Mode with Networking.

Try these free online virus scans:
<http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php>
<http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm>
<http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/>
<http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp> *Should scan with current
signatures*
<http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp>

Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional carriers of infection.
Have you downloaded these programs before? Download them again, as many are
revised frequently, to keep up with the current level of malware being attempted
constantly - get the absolutely most current version of each product listed.
They're all free - and most pretty small, so they download quickly enough.

First, download LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFIx from <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>,
and CWShredder from <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>. All are
free.

Next, close all Internet Explorer and Outlook windows, then run CWShredder.
Have it fix all variants.

Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155> and Spybot S&D
<http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download>. Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log. <http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=227>
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it, or a link to your forum post, here):
<http://forums.net-integration.net/>
<http://forums.spywareinfo.com/>
<http://forums.tomcoyote.org/>
<http://www.wilderssecurity.com/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

It just clicks and shuts off. It shuts off before I get into logon screen. It will only stay on in safe mode but now I can't get safe mode all the way up. I get a black screen with safe mode written in all four corners nothing else. I can move my mouse but have no taskbar. I've tried with networking and command prompt, still no luck. That's why I'm trying to get to a command prompt. If I can do anything there. Someone sent me a msconfig or driver fix in the recovery console area. But now my recovery console is asking for a password that was never set up. the first time i ran recovery console it didn't ask for one. I ran chkdsk \r i think. But it didn't change anything. Also, when I was able to get to safe mode with networking I was still unable to get on the internet.

If you have the XP CD you can get to the recovery console (pressing R,
then selecting windows instalation, when asked for the password, use
the one employed when XP was installed or leave blank and press enter)

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=kb;en-us;Q314058

Once you are on the C: prompt type
chkdsk /r
This will scan and fix hard drive errors
Reboot and try to log on.

If no joy, use the same method to get to recovery console and type
fixmbr
To fix the master boot record
Reboot, and try to log on.

If still no joy, perform a repair-install. Detailed instructions here:

Good luck

I can't get to the recovery console it wants a password that was never set up. I ran recovery console first (it didn't ask for password) I ran chkdsk /r. Did not help. Next time I went to recovery console it asked for a password. I installed xp pro on this machine & did not give an administrator password, however, it still asks I give it a blank return and it says invalid password. It makes no sense to me....I am truly at a loss. Is there anything I can do if I can ever get to a command prompt???

Thanks sandr

I have already installed a repair install of xp pro. Same problem occurs. After running Norton scan it left me at an A prompt and this is the closest thing I've come to a C prompt since I exitted out of the first recovery console. I just thought that maybe at a C prompt I might be able to do something ......anything. So if there are any clues to get to a C prompt from here please share..

You might have bad memory!

If you can't get to the recovery console because of a password, try to
do a repair-install (pressing Enter instead of R), to do that it won't
ask you for a password, it should keep your data.
