Start with heat, ie fans that are not working.

Thanks! I have a laptop (Dell Inspiron 5100) and I do hear a fan running.
Could it just make noise and not do anything?

The laptop fan could be working or it could be that it can't keep up
with the heat. Overheating is a common problem with laptops. Or you
could have other hardware failure. There is no way for us to know. You
should call Dell tech support.

Does it shut off and stay off, or does it reboot?

Shutting off and staying off is most likely a hardware problem, with
overheating the prime suspect, as others have suggested.

Shutting down and restarting is very often caused by a "system
failure" class error condition when the default option to "restart on
failure" is left in place.

For the restarting problem open Control Panel - System - Advanced and
click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom)
section. In the Startup and Recovery window click on the checkbox for
"automatically restart" to clear it then click on Apply and OK as
needed to exit.

Good luck

I'm having this problem with Windows Vista Ultimate. I ran the machine all
day today while I was doing work and burning some discs. I finish working and
came back to check on some email and the machine had shut off and rebooted.
Once I logged back in a dialog box popped up and said Windows had shut down
unexpectedly and was searching for a solution to the problem but found
nothing. I don't get it. I've custom built the system and have been running
fine for over a month and everything seems to be running fine as far as the
hardware goes. I have temperature displays for the CPU and it runs at about
26-28 degrees Celsius. I've read that it would not reboot if it overheated.
I'm bamboozled!

Any suggestions?

You should post to a Vista newsgroup. This one is for the XP OS. Also it's
best not to post your question as a reply to someone else's thread. Start a
new post with your issue and give some relevant information such as the
computer, configuration, RAM, and a description of the problem.

I'm having the same problems. Works just fine when I am working on it, but
if I turn my back for a while. it just shuts off. Mine is also a custom
build, but it ran just fine for several months prior to starting this
behavior. Could Microsoft have put an update on it that does something weird
under idle state?

FRUSTRATING!

I have the problem of shutting off and staying off. However after replacing
the majority of the computer guts, it still occurs. I have an HP desktop
with new motherboard/processor/fan and a new power supply. It is a quality
550W power supply. It's hard to believe that I still have an overheating
problem now. I added the power supply for a new graphics card.

Make sure the fan on the processor heat sink is working and dust free.
