Computer Shutdown/Powerdown/Turn Off Problem

Hi All -

I've just built my first two computers and really enjoyed the learning
experience. I'm in the final stages of working out some final problems, so
hope you can shed some light.

Last week, I bought an Abit AN7 mobo with Athlon 3200+ processor and 1GB
dual channel. Everything has gone rather smoothly, except I noticed a
shutdown problem I had not noticed before today. Running Windows XP Pro,
when I shutdown the system and opt to Turn Off, the system seems to shut
down (I can even hear power go down inside the chassis), but it doesn't
completely turn off. The Windows XP splash screen saying "Windows is
shutting down" remains indefinitely on the screen. If I push the power
button and hold it for 4-5 seconds, it will turn off. Alternatively, hitting
the reset switch does just fine.

I've had this machine up and running for 4-5 days now and I can't believe I
haven't noticed it not powering down before. But I do usually keep the
machine running 24 hours and I guess it's possible that I've just hit the
reset switch when I've needed to reboot. I did upgrade the BIOS two days ago
and I'm wondering if maybe something in the BIOS was reset that would cause
this behavior. Or maybe I just connected something incorrectly to the
motherboard.

I'm a novice but learning, so hopefully someone knows what may be going on
here.

Thanks.

Hi

For shutdown/restart problems, please have a look at MVP Jim Eshelman's web
