Computer rebooting & not loading completely

My computer is not loading completely. The blue screen appears right before
the profiles show up and then it reboots. I have tried loading in safe mode,
but that does not work either.

2 pieces of background info.

1. I was having problems with Anti-virus software for about a week and have
been working with the vendor to get it reinstalled.
2. I had just installed a firewire card an hour or so before this started.

I am at the point of using the recovery disk (and therefore wiping out the
former contents) unless I get a better suggestion.

Which PCI Slot # did you install the Firewire Card ?
(Count from Video Card (AGP/PCIe) downward -1,2..))

Most motherboards offer only two PCI slots that have an
independent IRQ ( How computer hardware gets the attention
of the processor ). Usually, but not always only slots 2/5 are
IRQ independent. You may have a IRQ sharing situation where
there is a conflict. Some hardware doesn't play well in a sharing
situation.

Any AV ( ?: McAfee/Norton ) that needs vendor help to install
needs to be returned. Buy Nod32 from ESET, you won't regret
it.

Did you try Last known good configuration, and for safe mode, did you try
safe mode w/command prompt?

I did try Last Known Good Configuration & I did try safe mode. I had the
same issues. I did not try safe mode with command prompt.

Uhm... remove the firewire card?

That's fair. But I used my video camera on it for over an hour before it
crashed. Wouldn't there have been a conflict right away?

If you can get in to safe mode with command prompt, then try a system
restore from the command line:
c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

I don't think this is going to work though.

If you know what drivers were added by the installation of the firewire card
you could try disabling them from recovery console by means of the disable
command. Also you could disabled the Norton services through the recovery
console. No I don't know what all services those would be.

Another option is to restore a previous copy of the registry in the recovery
console. See this article.

Along the lines of that article, you could try restoring a copy of the
registry that is stored in a recent system restore point made at a time when
the computer was running ok. You would have to do this by installing the
drive as a slave drive in another XP computer, then take ownership of the
System Volume Information folder in the root of the drive. See this article

Navigate to the folder that begins with _restore inside the \System Volume
Information folder. Then locate the RP subdirectory with a creation date
prior to the problem. It might be the one with the highest number in the
suffix, i.e. RP200.

Copy the _Registry_Machine_System file to \Windows\System32\Config\System.
Repeat for the other hives.

I did the restart the computer would startup but then reboot. One thing is
that I get a Stop Error c0000296 saying that the kernel32.dll file had been
relocated and that the application would not run properly. I can't get it to
start in Safe mode either with or without the command promp. Do you know
what would cause the c0000296 stop error?

FYI, you should not post a new question as a reply to someone else's
thread - called hijacking. Post a new message with relevant details. "Me
too" posts often times don't get much help.
