Computer opperates slowly

I have a sony vio laptop and recently it takes about 40
minutes to boot up. I recently went away for 2 days and
left computer on and since then its very slow.

Please help.

restored to an earlier date ,didn't make any difference.
Once the 9 icons on right bottom of screen come up I then
can use the computer.
