I assume that you are using a dial up connection and
Internet connection sharing (you don't make the details
clear in your post)
If so, check all the properties of the dial up connection
(right click "my network places"/properties/right click
dial up connection/properties)There are several settings
there for prompting before dialling up (rather than
automatic), allowing or preventing other computers that
share the connection from initiating it automatically etc.
Also, if you have a firewall, check to see what programs
are allowed access to the internet - as you say, some of
these may be initiating a connection when it isn't
essential - if sochange the settings in the firewall to
prompt you and require permission to dial.

One computer on my 2 computer network seems to be
automatically logging on to the internet every few
seconds. This has become not just annoying but very
expensive. My guess is that some background program is
responsible - but I have no idea how to find & disable
it - HELP!!!
