Computer name conflict

I setup a laptop for one of our users who was running XP SP2 to connect them
to our W2K lan. I used his user name as the computer name but didn't know
that someone had previously setup his desktop with the same name. When I
tried to login to the network I was unable to use any network resources.

I tried to change his computer name and reattach to the domain but XP
wouldn't let me. I tried to login on his local computer and change it but
that didn't work either. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Try this Jeff:

Be sure to have the local administrator account passwords.
On one of the two machines, have it join the WORKGROUP. Just name it as
something like WorkgroupX. Reboot. Change the name of the laptop machine.
Reboot. Now try attaching to the domain again.

assuming you have domain network, you need to join the domain first. yo uneed to know the administrator password or have your administartor help you.
