Drastic solution - reformat the hard disk and reinstall the OS. Start from scratch again.
I hope you have backed up all essential data.
but before reformatting the hard drive, check to see that RAM, video card and sound card is properly seated in its slot
my other suspicion is that it may be a power supply issue. check for virus, spyware etc
After checking all this tried to repair the installation of XP and it all didn't work then reformat the hard drive
