Computer "locked" after XP Update

All: My computer installed an Automatic Update last night from Microsoft.
This morning when I log on I now get a "logon" window which I never had
before. In past versions you could simply not enter a "password" and the
computer would start up. This never occured before, I never entered a Used
ID or Password, this is a Dell that came loaded with XP. Had it for 2 years
with no previous problems.

How do I get the computer "unlocked" since I never entered a password before?
Thanks

When a XP machine has only a single user account, it will automatically
log on to that account. Likely, the updates included the .Net framework.
This adds new accounts to your PC. Once multiple accounts are present
the machine will present the login screen at boot time. You can use the
PowerToy, Tweak-UI for Windows XP to create an Autologon. Install
the PowerToy and click into the Logon category, then the Autologon sub
option field - supply your username and password (if it exists).

I assume your speaking of the ASPNET acount.

Another auto update fudging up a computer!!

I set the computer up originally with three accounts: 1. mine
(administrator), 2. my son 3. my wife. None of the accounts have ever had
passwords before.

Now when the computer boots uip, th elongon appears with my wife's account
in the ID box, I do not enter a password, the dialogue box goes away and the
screen only shows the Dell wallpaper. I am able to "Ctrl, Alt, Delete" and
gain access tothe Task Manager.

The automatic update is the one that is set by XP and goes to the Microsoft
website and checks on a preiodic basis..... not sure what ASPNET is....

I have tried entering passwords into the opening logon but each time I get
an error message saying the name or domain is wrong. I can only get by this
logon by not entering anything into the password line and hitting Enter...
Not sure what to do to get it unlocked

Any help is much appreciated

Steve,

Don't know if you're still having a problem (your post is 8 days ago), but
you're not experiencing a "lock" situation. Rather you are successfully
logging onto Win XP, but are then hitting a Trojan which results in a blank
desktop and no task bar. The mouse/keyboard is active and you can indeed
C-A-D.

I've worked on two PCs over the last 5 days that have this exact problem.
First, you should be able to get a desktop in safe mode, but if not, do a
C-A-D, then click File -> Start New Process, then enter "explorer.exe" and
click OK. The desktop should be temporarily restored. Update your
anti-virus pgm and do a complete scan. Do a Google search for "anti_exe.exe
blank desktop" and you'll find a lot of info.
