Hi Guys,
Have a P4, MSI 65IM-V Mobo, 80Gig HDD, running windows Xp Service Pack 2.
my problems is that the computers keeps freezing up constantly, it is
driving me nuts. What normally causes this to happen and what is the best
way for me to correct it, are there any URL's that will explain it for me.
Help and advice is welcome and appreciated
Thanks Guys
Bob

Hi,

Is there a BSOD (error message)? Freezing without any error is usually
indicative of a hardware failure, something best left to a technician to
correct. If there is an error message, what is it?

maybe you can help us by telling us what "you" are doing when it freezes up?
and if you have changed "anything" on your computer? software/hardware

Check in Event Viewer ( Application and System tabs ) for Error Reports
matching the time the freeze occurred and post copies here. Does it
occur when you are using any particular programme? Have you made any
changes to hardware / software in the period immediately before the
problem started?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
thanks for the replies. It does not really matter what I am doing, emails
browsing the web et cetra, sometimes when writing an email the cursor will
freeze up, but the mouse arrow can still be moved about. If I wait for a
few minutes it will on occaision correct itself, on other occaisions I have
to re- boot it. I did however instal a new keyboard and mouse around three
weeks ago
Regards
Bob

Thanks Gerry,
I have copied a few Error Reports, can you shed any light on them or where
can I send them to for help. It basically does not matter what I am doing
when it happens, but more often or not it is when I am using IE6 Service
Pack 2
Regards
Bob

Have you already run 2 different anti-spyware apps and 2 different
anti-virus apps to make sure your system is clean?

I safe mode?

Hi,
yep, I tried to run spybot s &d, installed it abut soon as I tried to run
got the dreaded program not responding(which I get alot), so uninstalled and
installed ad-aware, this ran ok and found 78 critcal entries, so I deleted
them, and will wait and see what happens. My virus checker is NOD32, it
has not picked anything up as yet

Try running Spybot in Safe Mode. Run AdAware in Safe Mode again too.

Alias

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the
Performance Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak?

How large is your hard drive and how much free space does it have? If
your hard drive is partitioned then details for each partition would be
helpful.

Hope this helps.

When dealing with a persistent virus / trojan you need to delete system
restore points and not use them as they will contain the virus and put
it back into your system. Turn off System Restore until cleaning is
finished. Also run your anti-virus with updated definitions in safe
mode.

Create a new folder named Sysclean (e.g., C:\Program files\Sysclean, or
just a desktop folder).
Download Sysclean.com (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp) and
place it in this folder.

Download the latest Controlled Pattern Release zip
(http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp, e.g., lpt123.zip) and
extract its contents to the same folder. See the Readme text file for
additional instructions.

Delete Temporary Internet Files (IE Tools>Internet Options>General)
accepting the option to delete all offline content. Reboot and delete
contents of all TEMP folders and then your Recycle Bin.

Close all running programs including your anti-virus application, go
offline, and run Sysclean. For best results, do nothing with the machine
until the scan completes.

If the scan shows any infections in System Restore files and you're
running WinXP, create a new Restore Point
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore), then delete
all but the most recent Restore Point (Start>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>Disk Cleanup>More options).

Work through the spyware removal programmes etc in turn in safe mode
until you get no results.

Afterwards, update your own anti-virus application and perform another
full system scan.

Finally run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to the HijackThis
forum here:
http://aumha.net/

You will need to register with Aumha to be able to post.
