Lenny

hi,
I have a new XP Pro computer that will not start properly. When I turn it on
I get the message to insert a boot disk and nothing happens. I turn the
computer off and leave it for 10 minutes and then back on again and if I am
lucky it starts up just fine. I have done a HD check and nothing is found.
Because I have already added 40 GB of stuff onto the drive I would prefer to
not have to send the machine back. Is there anything that I can do to cure
this problem?
Thanks
Lenny

New & "Flaky" certainly isn't a good combination. From your
description the drive would seem to not be fully spun up and
ready when BIOS is trying the Boot device sequencing. I can
understand your reluctance to RMA it, but you've definitely got
a hardware issue in play. It always helps to note the vendor &
model number of the PC in question. Sometimes responders
may be aware of a known issue with that particular PC. Have
you checked the BIOS settings ? - I'd also visit the vendors
web site and see if a newer BIOS Flash addresses the issues
you are having. I would also check the BIOS environmental
monitors and see how close to the +/- thresholds the voltage
levels are reading. You may have a marginal power supply &
it prevents the drive from reaching full rotating speed and being
ready at power on.

Thanks,
It is a Mesh Titan 2 GS
Such good reviews everywhere too.
Support line is hard work though!

Lenny,

Check your BIOS settings.

* Reboot computer. As it reboots hold down the 'Delete'
key until BIOS appears
* Using your arrow keys, use the right arrow to advance
to the 'Boot' option

Note the order of the 'IDE Drive', 'ATAPI CD Drive' & 'Floppy Drive'. In
order to reformat your hard drive at a later date the 'ATAPI CD Drive' must
be the '1st Boot device'. This should also be the default setting.

1st Boot device: ATAPI CD Drive
2nd Boot device: IDE Drive
3rd Boot device: Floppy Drive

Try switching the ATAPI CD Drive & IDE Drive, making the IDE Drive the 1st
Boot device.

* use the down arrow and go to '1st Boot device' > press Enter
* use arrow key to highlight 'IDE Drive' > press Enter
* use the down arrow and go to '2nd Boot device' > press Enter
* use arrow key to highlight 'ATAPI CD Drive' > press Enter
* Press F10 to Save, Exit & restart computer

Hello Lenny

Before you added the 40GB to your NEW computer did it exhibit this message? Also if it is a new system then I am sure that if you call the computer manufacturer and their tech\repair department they will be able to help you. Is it so very new that the guarantee on the computer is still valid?

Bye
