Hi,

I have a small business network using Windows XP. There are a total of five computers on all but one of the computers - each computer name is listed on My Network Places. One computer lists itself as Unknown. It takes much longer for this computer to access files on the other computers. The computer is named and the name shows up correctly on the other four computers.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jeanie
Slow Network Browsing is a common XP complaint
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/slowbrowse02.htm
To speed things up create a shortcut your network computers
My Network Places>View Workgroup Computers Right Click each one listed and
choose create shortcut and choose Yes.
You can than make a folder on the desktop for them.
As for the "Unknown"
I (and many others) have the same thing but I've never found an explanation.
Even Steve Winograd (A real guru who posts here and writes for
PracticallyNetworked) has the same thing and is unable to explain.
Hope this helps and Happy New Year
