After turning on my computer it takes forever untill I can use it. In the
lower right corner I have 15 icons which come up one at a time. I've been
informed that this is only taking up memory space and I should remove some of
these. My question is Is it safe and how do I go about it?
Thanks Bob

There are numerous things you can do, depending on what results you feel will be
best. Here are a few:

You can try right-clicking on the icon in the systray, and looking at Properties
or possibly Settings, if the application gives you those options. You may be able
to disable it from starting up through that method. Of course, if it's an
antivirus application or something else important, you won't want to disable it!

Another method is to go to Start > Run > and type msconfig and hit enter. You can
control what applications start up there.

You can also uninstall any applications that you no longer need, that are
starting up in the systray.

Leave the icons alone.

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit
Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard drive and how much free space?

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

Another avenue of enquiry is the Event Viewer System log.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Hope this helps.

Check out this link:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

Use these sites to research what's running on start up. Have a look in
task manager - right click an empty area of the task bar and click on
Task Manager or do ctrl-alt-del.

www.google.com

http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

Once you know what's running you can make an informed decision on what
you want to run. To turn off some of these the first step should be to
check in the options for the program you don't want to start and see if
there is a setting to tell it not to run at startup. The next step is
to remove any entries you don't want from the two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys
in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.

You have told many apps to auto load when windows loads. Run those apps,
and turn off that setting.
