Computer is slow after formatting !

Please Help ! I've recently formatted my pc and have installed all the critical updates, but ever since I reformatted my pc, its been super slow, laggy at times. I have cable connection and the other pcs in my house work just fine. My computer has never been this slow before. It takes twice as long as it should to open a window and playing games are horrible. Please let me know what I can change to fix this problem. Thanks
 
Look in Task Manager / Performance / Physical Memory Available. Is this
number low ( below 50 ) ? I suspect too many programs running in the
background , hard drive seek time or lack of available memory. Jym

Is a homebuilt or purchased? Is there a cd that came with the motherboard or
computer, and did you install the chipset drivers, etc that are required
after installing Windows. Did you use a "restore" disk (which should load
everything necessary) or did you install the operating system from a Windows
cd?

Mine is about a third - so how do I fix this please?
There are squillions of exe files running - but I don't know which ones do
what????

Hit alt ctrl del
Task manager comes up.
Click tab user name
This will sort your running processes.
Try to determine what the 'non system ' tasks are.
Those you are running, see if you can figure what these are.

Post back if not sure what something is.

msconfig can be used to shut some tasks down.
turn off what you understand.
Services can be enabled or disabled via admin ---> services.
What a service does is explained as you click on each service.
