Computer Hangs Up

Hello! I'm having some bad troubles with my XP hanging up. After it
sits for around 15 minutes or so, it starts to ignore my requests to
bring up the Task Manager, won't open the internet, and refuses to shut
down, restart, or switch to a different user. The light on the tower is
always blinking, like it's trying to load something huge. I've looked
through all the background processes and couldn't find anything
harmful.
I've had to pull the plug five times yesterday and once today, since I
had no other way to get it to shut down on its own. Any suggestions?
Help would be much appreciated!

You have a virus or spyware infection.

Alternately it could be a failing hard drive.
