When starting the computer from total power down, the computer (Dell
dimension 8300) works fine. However when the computer has been left idle for
short periods of say 1 hour or more, the the system hangs. All programs and
internet/LAN access lock up which requires a full hard boot to enable
restart and program access.

I think that the problem started after updating to SP2

Appreciate your support

Hello pj,
Do you have / use a screensaver or have you set some power saving option in Control Panel's Power Options. Like turning off the hard disk after xxx amount of idle time?
Go to Control Panel >>Appearance and Themes >> next select Display >> look at Screen Saver tab.

Is it set to power off the hard drive after xx amount of idle time ?
Control Panel >> Performance and Maintenance >> Power Options.

Right-Click the My Computer icon on desktop. Select Properties.
Next, select Advanced. Look for a block that says Startup and recovery. Press the settings button.
In System failure section, turn off (un-check) Automatically restart. Apply change.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for the reply.

I turned off my screen saver a couple of weeks ago in an effort to resolve
the problem. I also set my power saving settings to never for the monitor,
hard drive and the system standby.

The system failure section was also unchecked already for automatic restart.

The system operates fine while I am using the computer, It just goes to
sleep when sitting idle and wont wake up.

Keep the ideas coming, we will beat this bugger yet!!

cheers
