Computer freezing up

Running up to date 2.5 G computer Windows XP Media Edition.

When reading a newsgroup (this one) a message often directs me to a link, as
a solution to a problem. Often, when I click the link, nothing happens, and
when I click to go back, the computer freezes. The cursor moves but nothing
will open or close. I wait- nothing. Then use Ctl-Alt-Del, nothing happens.
The only way to get any action is to hit main reset button. Computer then
goes in an endless loop of "Ending program- status", and only by constantly
fiddling with different close buttons, will anything happen. Twice it has
restarted, reporting the "Microsoft has recovered from a serious error"
screen.
Twice, I have had to shut the main power button off to get any movement.
I have run virus scan, updated the virus checker, (it updates every day
anyway), run AD-aware, still no result.
I believe this problem has happened in other instances, as well as
newsgroups-- and I should mention, only a couple programs running.
Any suggestions?
 
If you click on a link and nothing happens, it is a URL, web address.
You'll need to highlight it, go to edit, click copy and paste it to your browser.
If it is blue print and probably underlined it is a hyperlink and clickable.
 
Unfortunately, the ones it happens with are the blue, underlined ones, which
were the ones that I always thought were clickable.
