Computer Freezes Up On Startup

Every few times that I start up my computer I will see
the Dell screen pop up and then the Windows XP screen
pops up, but after that it will just sit on a black
screen and the computer will do nothing. What I then
have to do is, to hit the restart button, then go into
the bios, exit without saving changes, and then tell the
computer to start windows normally, and that seems to
work. If anyone has any ideas what this could be, or how
I can fix it please help.

Why would you have to go into the BIOS? You don't give enough
information to get a good answer. What are your computer specs? What
changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't? Are
there any clues in XP's Event Viewer? Post back with details for help.

Don't Panic!
.

After It freezes on the black screen on startup, I try to
restart it, and it just shows the dell screen then
freezes on the black again. it will do this no matter how
many times i restart. the only way i have found to get
past the freezing in that case is to go into the bios,
during the dell screen, and then exit it. for some
reason it will then bypases the black frozen screen.

comp. specs. = 933mHz, 512 mb Ram, three hard drives.....

the computer runs great other than the startup. To tell
you the truth, I'm not sure what changes between the
times it works, and the times it doesn't. I usually will
have the computer on for days at a time, so a lot can
happen between restarts.

I didn't see anything in the Event Viewer, I think that
might be, because the problem is happening before the
windows boot screen.

let me know if you have any ideas.

If you are getting problems before the operating system loads, perhaps
this is a hardware issue connected with the hard drive. Try different
cables, check connections, do a drive diagnosis with a manufacturer's
utility. I can't imagine why going into the BIOS would do any good at
all, but maybe Dell Tech Support would know.

Good luck,
