i built my computer yesterday, and everything was great (for the most part) until it was ready for use

every time i try to use something like MSN Messenger, Windows Media Player, or a game benchmark, my computer freezes. when i run the computer in safe mode, i don't have this problem

for reference, my specs are: Asrock K7S8XE Motherboard, AMD Athlon XP 2700+, 512 MB PC2700 DDR RAM, GeForce FX 5200 PCI, Seagate 200 GB Hard Disk Drive with 8 MB Cache

BIOS reads that everything is running fine, and task manager shows that nothing is taking up a buttload of processing power. i downloaded the latest GeForce Drivers and drivers for my audio system

since it works in safe mode, i dont think it's a hardware problem...anyone have any input

thanks :D

My first thought was bad RAM, but as you built the system yourself, I would
ask whether you are overclocking the CPU. If you are, don't :). You're
going to need to try and troubleshoot the problem some more, as with the
limited info it could be anything really. Try to isolate components 1 by 1
by disabling them in device manager, same for startup programs. You can use
system monitor to track individual components to see what's going on as
well.. If you don't solve it, post your updated info here and I'm sure
someone will help.

I believe that safe mode uses default display drivers. and since it works in
safe mode I would be thinking a display drive . System ram might also be
involved in the crime. Jym

my friend said the same thing; it seems likely

i've updated the Nvidia drivers and DX9. what other display drivers might be causing the problem?

Make sure the bios is set to default. Dont overclock the video card.
Update your mainboard drivers. Are you running high quality ram?
Do you have onboard video running agp ? Did you disable in the bios? Jym

I disabled the video card in device manager using safe mode, and rebooted normally. it worked fine, just like in safe mode. however, that meant i had no video card to use. i tried reinstalling the video card with the drivers given on the CD, but it still gave the same problem. this video card, GeForce FX 5200 PCI, works fine in my other computer.

any idea? now that i know whats causing the problem i've at least gotten somewhere...but i just don't know how to fix it. ._.

thanks for the help so far, guys :D if anyone knows what to do next, please let me know.
